A message from Jen Knoch, ECW editor and campaign creator:
The Hope in the Dark candle was inspired by the Women’s Marches around the world in January 2017, and by Rebecca Solnit’s must-read book of the same name. In it, Solnit argues that we never know what may come of small acts of goodness and that change often originates among those not seen as powerful. “Power comes from the shadows and the margins . . . our hope is in the dark around the edges, not the limelight of center stage. Our hope and often our power.” A single candle can illuminate a dark room: imagine hundreds, thousands, millions. They could turn day to night.
One hundred percent of the proceeds of the Hope in the Dark candle are donated to charities who work on behalf of the environment or vulnerable populations, including Black, Indigenous and people of colour, women, LGBTQ+ people, and refugees. But beyond the money raised, I see the candles as a call to action. Each comes with a note asking that, by the time the candle burns down, people to come up with their own way to bring more light to the world.
As of November 2017, the candles have raised $1400, and have been used in healing ceremonies in First Nations communities, in a fundraising raffle, and have inspired a necklace that supports Planned Parenthood.
For a limited time, for every purchase made through the ECW website, you’ll receive a FREE 125ml eco-soy Hope in the Dark Candle (Lemon-aid scent). ECW will donate the cost of the candle to The Children’s Book Bank and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA).
