Paid Internships in Book Publishing 

ECW Press is offering three paid internships in early 2018. These opportunities will involve you in the many aspects of a book publishing company active in Canada, the U.S., and around the world, joining a team of 16 people. We are looking for candidates with experience in any of the roles below, and also candidates that expand the diversity of people currently working in book publishing. The dimensions of diversity include, but are not limited to, ancestry, culture, ethnicity, gender identity, gender expression, language, physical and intellectual ability, race, religion (creed), sex, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.

Each internship will pay $6,000, and lasts from February 12 to May 11. You will work full-time, normal business hours in the ECW office in the east end of Toronto, in a friendly, informal environment. There will be the occasional evening and weekend events offsite.

The ideal candidates have earned a university degree, demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, possess strong organizational abilities in order to meet deadlines, and are pro-active and willing to take on new challenges.


Our three internships in early 2018 are: 

1. Production Editor Internship

Duties could include:

- distributing ebooks and audiobooks to third-party vendors
- assisting in the creation of ebook editions
- co-ordinating narrators for audiobooks
- implementing marketing plans specific to digital editions
- proofreading, and assisting with copy editing
- inputting corrections, and assisting with typesetting
- researching photos and other material, and
- co-ordinating editorial submissions and applications.

The ideal candidate is proficient in Microsoft Office applications, Adobe Creative Suite applications, and XML/HTML text editing software.

2. Marketing/Publicity Internship

Duties could include:

- co-ordinating our social accounts, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Goodreads
- researching comp titles
- co-ordinating awards submissions
- preparing and distributing media alerts for staff and sales representatives
- fulfilling website orders
- co-ordinating and facilitating events
- escorting authors to events and media opportunities, and
- co-ordinating marketing and publicity mailings.

The ideal candidate is proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

3. Data and Operations Internship

Duties could include:

- analyzing daily and weekly data about book sell-through to determine marketing opportunities and inventory needs
- analyzing monthly data about book sales and inventory to determine title performance and future needs
- accruing financial transactions and preparing financial reports
- developing and sending bibliographic data
- organizing inventory in multiple locations
- drafting communication and reports to authors, funders, publishers, media about acquisitions, etc.
- drafting contracts and rights communication, and
- managing supplies and other office materials.

The ideal candidate is proficient in Microsoft Office applications, FileMaker Pro, and any accounting software.
