This book draws on the research of earlier biographers, but Daniel Bratton broadens the scope of the discussion to include new areas of investigation. Besides archival research, he has reinterviewed subjects interviewed by previous biographers, and tracked down previously withheld information. He has also explored, as no one else has done, the geographical settings of Mazo’s life and fictions, looking at them from a new perspective. The real strength of this book, however, which gives it an importance beyond de la Roche studies and Canadian literature, is its innovative format. Bratton’s approach will recommend the book to those interested in the theory and practice of biography. But the murder isn’t the only thing on Monty’s mind.

A secret from the past and turmoil with his estranged wife Maura have Monty singing the blues, lashing out at his closest friends, and spending far too much time in the bars of Halifax.

About the Collins-Burke Mysteries

This multi-award-winning series is centred around two main characters who have been described as endearingly flawed: Monty Collins, a criminal defence lawyer who has seen and heard it all, and Father Brennan Burke, a worldly, hard-drinking Irish-born priest. The priest and the lawyer solve mysteries together, but sometimes find themselves at cross-purposes, with secrets they cannot share: secrets of the confessional, and matters covered by solicitor-client confidentiality. The books are notable for their wit and humour, and their depiction of the darker side of human nature ― characteristics that are sometimes combined in the same person, be it a lawyer, a witness on the stand, or an Irish ballad singer who doubles as a guerrilla fighter in the Troubles in war-torn Belfast. In addition to their memorable characters, the books have been credited with a strong sense of place and culture, meticulous research, crisp and authentic dialogue, and intriguing plots. The novels are set in Nova Scotia, Ireland, England, Italy, New York, and Germany. The priest and the lawyer solve mysteries together, but sometimes find themselves at cross-purposes, with secrets they cannot share: secrets of the confessional, and matters covered by solicitor-client confidentiality. What accounts for the many happy outcomes in the novels of a man who portrays evil so uncompromisingly and unrelentingly? The answer to these questions lies in the unorthodox religious vision of Robertson Davies. All of Davies’s novels are redolent with ingeniously used biblical references and quotations. Catching the Wind in a Net traces the evolution of Davies’s religious views and their influence on his novels. But he can’t round up the usual suspects this time. The blood-drenched body of Reinhold Schellenberg, a world-renowned German theologian, has been found on the altar of an old church in Halifax, Nova Scotia, during Vespers on Saint Cecilia’s day. The man has nearly been decapitated. The controversial priest, once a top insider in the Vatican, was known to provoke strong feelings in Catholics of all ideological stripes. Now those feelings have overflowed with horrifying results.

His friend Father Brennan Burke has just opened a choir school for priests, monks, nuns, and other Catholics devoted to the glorious music of the Church’s past. October and her ghost friends are hot on the trail of the person (or persons) responsible for Morna MacIsaac’s death in 1914 — or as hot as one can be on a 100–year–old trail — when October’s friend Yumi finds herself the target of anti–Asian harassment at school. Solving two mysteries at once won’t be easy, but our intrepid heroine in black eyeliner loves a challenge. Follow October, Cyril, Tabetha, Morna, Kirby, and Derek as they sleuth their way through a blizzard of suffragettes, iceskating disasters, mystical telephones, and boats named Titanic, all set against a backdrop of yuletide pandemonium.

Evan Munday is the author and illustrator of The Dead Kid Detective Agency, which was a finalist for the Sunburst Award for fantastical young adult literature and the Silver Birch Fiction Award. The world of international crime, drugs, and money laundering forms the backdrop to Dirty White Collar, a thriller that begins in a medium-security prison near Toronto and ends in Providenciales, the exotic Caribbean hideaway as famous for its secretive offshore financial institutions as its spectacular beaches. Jerome Wyndham, a prominent criminal lawyer, has traded his profession, reputation, marriage, and friends for a relentless refusal to believe that his only daughter was a drug addict who died of a self-administered overdose. His obsession lands him in prison, where he meets Dirk Mueller, a Colombian drug lord whose lengthy sentence has separated him from his family. In their isolation, the two men, so disparate in background and outlook, forge a relationship rooted in the love of their children. With the unwitting assistance of Adam Portland, the police officer who arrested Wyndham, and Buddy Ladner, a reporter who has been following Jerome’s story, Jerome finds himself back on the street with Dirk. As their well laid plans to resolve their personal mysteries unravel in death, deceit, denial, and desecration, Jerome begins to question the obsessions that have driven his life — until the thrilling climax gives them renewed meaning.

A lawyer by training, Julius Melnitzer is a legal affairs journalist who spent almost two decades as an advocate in Ontario’s criminal and civil courts.
